One of the most common reasons people come into the massage clinic is for lower back pain. It’s the kind of pain that is dull, aching and makes it uncomfortable for you to stay sitting or standing in any one spot for a period of time.
While remedial massage and other physical therapies like chiro and physio are key to your recovery, building your core strength will alleviate lower back pain and help you on the road to pain free living.
Core strength has become a buzz term in fitness circles and we’re often told to ‘switch on’ our core when doing everything from running to maintaining good posture. But what does it mean? Our core is made up of the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles and the muscles that run the length of the spine - called the erector spinae muscles. As postural muscles their role is to support the spine. A lack of strength in the muscles can contribute to lower back pain.
Want a simple step you can do to switch on the core that can be done whether you’re sitting in traffic or working out in the gym? Take a deep breath in and fill up your abs like your filling up a balloon. On the breath out deflate the balloon and imagine that you are drawing your belly button to your spine- this switches on the abdominal core muscles. At the same time draw up the pelvic floor muscles.
For a regular core work out you can’t go past Pilates. Pilates central focus is creating a strong core, that the rest of the body can operate around. Pilates teaches you how to build the strength in your postural muscles, stabilising the spine and helping to alleviate and prevent lower back pain.
