Can't draw? No worries!

I have had art materials set up, put aside, collecting for years. Every now and then I get them out, but more often than not, I fantasise about how I’d love to get them out, but don’t know what I’d draw.

I have had art materials set up, put aside, collecting for years. Every now and then I get them out, but more often than not, I fantasise about how I’d love to get them out, but don’t know what I’d draw.

Recently, I had the good fortune of hosting a garage sale where I got chatting with a potential purchaser who ran an art class locally. His enthusiasm was contagious.

After hearing what he does, I explained to him my drawing dilemma. He reassured me that I certainly was not alone and that his drawing classes were not about learning how to draw ‘properly,’ but rather learning how to free up each person’s own unique artistic ‘language’ that we all inherently have. As a writer, I was hooked. I was interested in discovering what my particular ‘drawing language’ was.

The following week I turned up to the class feeling very nervous, but proud of myself for actually getting there. A stick of charcoal and some butcher’s paper later, I was on my way. There was no pressure from the facilitator to create something realistic – this class was about just making some marks on paper, no matter how they turned out.

‘Getting out of your head,’ or letting go of any preconceived idea of what you were drawing was encouraged by exercises such as using your non-dominant hand, both hands at once, and drawing without taking your hand off the paper. The facilitator would then come around and comment on your own unique style of drawing that was coming through from doing the ‘warm up exercises.’

I found the whole experience liberating and fun. I have not pulled out my art gear at home yet, but I figure I’m one step closer, and next week I plan to head back to my class for some more creative inspiration.

When was the last time you undertook a creative endeavour that was inspiring and fun?
