Get on board as a farmer’s market shopper

We all know that increasing our fruit and vegetable intake is good for health, but how much time are we spending on looking at where we should source them from? There is much debate between organic vs non organic, but I’m here to throw another factor into the mix. Are your fruit and veges local? And are they fresh?

One way to ensure this is so is to shop at your local farmers market. Not only will you taste the difference, there are other advantages as well, such as eating seasonally, supporting local farmers, and reducing the environmental cost of long-haul transportation.

The Australian Farmers’ Markets Association has a fantastic website that can be found here.

The site provides information on where to find a local market, how to start your own market, and how to connect with others interested in fresh, local, and sustainable food systems. The list of markets is extensive for each state so there is a good chance there is one near you. Local meats and cheeses may also be a specialty at the market in your local area.
