1. Use good quality fuel
You probably wouldn’t put dirty fuel in your car. Doesn’t your body deserve the same treatment? Just as your car works better when you use good quality petrol, your body also needs the right type of fuel to run smoothly. Try to cut back on junk foods high in sugar, fat and salt, and load up on lean meats, wholegrain cereals and breads, vegetables, fruits and legumes
2. Have good suspension
Good suspension will soften the jarring and impact as you’re cruising along. If you’re a runner, your body will also appreciate some cushioning. Use good quality shoes designed specifically to help your body deal with the forces and jarring that occurs when you run. And just as your tires and shock absorbers become less effective over time, so does the cushioning in your shoes. Look to change your shoes every 6 – 12 months depending on how often you run.
3. Protect your exterior
Cars need polish to shield their surface from exposure to the elements. When you’re out and about, treat your body with the same respect. Protect your skin from sun damage by putting on SPF 30+ sun cream, wearing a long sleeve shirt and hat and avoiding the sun as best you can in the middle of the day.
4. Pay attention to rattles and faults
If you notice a strange rattle, noise or rumble in your car, you’d probably rush to get it looked at by an expert. Your body is the same. If something’s not right, get it seen to by a professional. Your doctor, physiotherapist of relevant health professional can diagnose minor problems and treat them before they become major ones.
5. Have a grease and oil change
Just as the grease and oil in your car will keep it running smoothly, your body needs fats and oils to function at its best. But choosing the right type of fat is crucial. Avoid greasy fried foods and animal fats found in butter, chicken skin and full fat dairy products. Substitute with healthy fats such as olive oil, cold water fish, avocado, nuts and seeds.
6. Schedule regular check-ups
If you don’t schedule a regular maintenance check for your car, it will more than likely break down. Check-ups are a form of prevention that allow you to make sure everything is functioning well. Don’t let your body become sluggish and unresponsive before doing something about it. Visit your healthcare professional regularly so they can monitor your weight, heart rate, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
