The quality of your sex life, and your ability to get and maintain an erection, could depend upon the quality of your lifestyle. Online personal trainer Andrew Cate uncovers some research that shows what you can do to boost your sexual health.

Understanding erectile function
Erectile dysfunction is defined as a consistent inability to get or maintain an erection, making it difficult to perform satisfactory sexual intercourse. It is thought to be a highly prevalent health problem affecting middle-aged men all around the globe. New research has emerged showing that a lot of the modifiable lifestyle risk factors that impact upon cardiovascular health may also have an impact on erectile dysfunction.

The research
A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine reviewed six clinical trials on erectile dysfunction that included a follow-up of at least six weeks of lifestyle modification. The summary of studies included 740 participants with an average age of 55.4 years, and the findings demonstrated significant improvement in erectile function associated with lifestyle changes. According to the researchers, this study adds to and strengthens existing knowledge that healthy dietary habits and increased physical activity are important to improve the sexual health of men. The researchers also noted that men with erectile dysfunction represent a specific population that may be especially motivated to adopt healthy lifestyle practices to improve their sexual health

Lifestyle implications
Choosing to adopt healthy lifestyle practices can play an important role in treating erectile dysfunction, or preventing it from occurring. Some of the key lifestyle factors identified in this study that can be modified to improve erectile dysfunction include:

  • Hypertension
  • Insulin resistance
  • Dyslipidaemia (high amounts of cholesterol and/or fat in the blood)
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Excess body fat
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Inactivity

To help overcome these risk factors, there are a number of lifestyle strategies that you can adopt, such as eating a healthy diet, participating in regular physical activity, getting adequate sleep and managing stress. Living a healthier lifestyle will not only reduce your chances of experiencing erectile dysfunction, it will also improve your cardiovascular health.
