Three steps to a healthy prostate

1 mins to read
An enlarged prostate can be of great discomfort to men, especially as they get older. Online personal trainer Andrew Cate looks at how to prevent, monitor and treat this common condition.

Step 1 – Self-monitor for symptoms

When the prostate becomes enlarged it may be due to benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, which can squeeze the urethra and make urination difficult. Many men experience urinary changes as they get older, and it’s important to monitor these changes to keep a check on your prostate health.

Some common symptoms of BPH include frequent day and night urination, difficulty in starting and finishing urination and a weak urinary flow.

For more information about BPH you can read our health topic.

Step 2 – Eat well

There is some scientific research to suggest that diet can have an impact on prostate health. A study reported in The Journal of Men’s Health found that fruit and vegetable consumption is associated with a reduced risk of BPH.

Additional research published in 2004 followed men who ate a diet that was generally low in fat, but a large proportion of the fat they did eat came from flaxseeds. After six months, the men had a significant decrease in the growth of prostatic tissue.

Both of these studies indicate that eating healthy, unprocessed foods rich in nutrients can allow you to take positive action to promote good prostate health.

Step 3 – Know when to get your prostate checked

If you’re over the age of 50, a yearly digital prostate examination may be recommended. This is where your doctor inserts a gloved and lubricated finger to feel for changes (swelling or hardness) to the prostate gland.

The procedure is very quick, and it should not cause pain or discomfort. If you have a family history of prostate problems and disease, you may need to have a digital test regularly from the age of 40. Speak to your doctor if you have any concerns.
