Rosehip oil is a plant-based, natural remedy that has been used for thousands of years to fight inflammation and ageing. It is a type of pressed seed oil, extracted from the fruit or rosehip of several species of wild rose bush, including Rosa moschata, Rosa canina and Rosa rubiginosa . Rosehip seed oil is a rich source of vitamin C, as well as folate, vitamins A, B3, D and E, and other nutrients including magnesium and zinc.
What is rosehip used for?
Rosehip has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and has been used in human medicine to treat inflammatory-related conditions. It may be used as a stand-alone treatment (for example, where a person cannot tolerate anti-inflammatory medication) or, more commonly, in conjunction with other treatments. Rosehip seed oil is contained in a number of beauty creams designed to fight wrinkles and signs of ageing, and it may counter the effects of sun damage.
In dogs, rosehip oil can be used as an ingredient in topical shampoos to nourish and revitalise skin.
Why does it work?
Rosehip contains phenols and flavonoids which are antioxidants. Antioxidants block the process of oxidation, which causes damage to cells. In addition, rosehip contains galactolipids, which are compounds that possess anti-inflammatory properties.
For cats and dogs that suffer allergic, itchy or dry skin, rosehip – when combined in a shampoo – helps wash away environmental allergens, dusts and dirt, and helps reduce inflammation.
How you use it?
Rosehip oil may be taken orally, as a regular daily supplement, or used in topical preparations such as creams, lotions and shampoos. If your dog or cat has dry or itchy skin, use of a shampoo like PAW NutriDerm® Replenishing Shampoo provides an effective, gentle clean without irritating the skin, or removing natural oils from the coat. PAW Nutriderm Replenishing Shampoo is a sulphate-free, moisture-rich shampoo combining the soothing properties of colloidal oatmeal with the nourishing and replenishing properties of rosehip oil. This helps strengthen the skin’s natural barriers, providing additional protection against allergens and irritants in the environment.
Rosehip oil is just one way that you can help your pet as they age. As always, ensure you consult your vet or pet specialist about any conditions that you are seeking to treat.
