I have just finished reading an incredibly inspiring book called Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering (2006) by Dr Sarah J Buckley [1].

Inspiring because it reminds us of our innate wisdom as women to birth naturally and safely. It reminds us to trust our body’s wisdom throughout pregnancy, to connect with the baby as soon as conception occurs and to follow our instinct throughout the journey of pregnancy and motherhood. I believe birth, which is one of the most natural and primitive events that occurs in a woman’s life, has become severely medicalised in recent times. This has seen massive increases in caesarean births and use of epidurals during labour in recent years, both of which may have lasting impacts on the mother and baby.

Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering discusses the evidence supporting a natural and safe pregnancy, a gentle and undisturbed labour, and tips on breastfeeding. There is an entire section about Gentle Mothering, which explores the benefits of co-sleeping for baby and mother (and dad too!).

Buckley also shares her journey – she includes stories of her four beautiful births, her breastfeeding career and of gentle mothering.

I recommend this book for every woman entering the fulfilling, beautiful and joyous time of pregnancy and motherhood. And for any woman concerned or fearful about birth, Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering will empower you with a full understanding of the labour process and will leave you excited and prepared for an instinctive and safe labour.
