It occurred to me recently that parents, particularly new parents, find it near impossible to turn off.
Having a newborn demanding you drop whatever you’re doing around the clock is hard work - mentally and physically. But I’ve come to realise it can also be a great way to gain some much-needed headspace.
As long as parent and baby are relaxed, breast or bottle-feeding generally forces individuals (excluding Jackie O moments) to sit and be still. For this reason, rather than being a repetitive chore, it can be a great way to claw back some mental wellbeing.
I’ve only recently discovered the feeding ritual is an ideal opportunity to recharge and workshop a few creative ideas.
While feeding my 11 week-old I also make a conscious effort to avoid computers, television, even mobile communication, allowing my mind to roam free of distraction. I don’t always get it right but when I do it feels like a mini triumph - and all parents need minor victories!
Do you see breast or bottle-feeding as a way to wind down or does it have the opposite effect on you?
