Tonight, Channel 9’s 60 Minutes program questioned the safety of supplements in a story about the widespread use of complementary and alternative medicine in Australia.
The health of our consumers is at the heart of Blackmores. We take any information related to consumer adverse reactions extremely seriously. We care.
The 60 Minutes program referenced the case of one patient who, it’s alleged, had experienced some degree of liver damage linked to a Blackmores product containing valerian. According to the program’s producer, the patient’s doctor had claimed valerian was the “culprit”. We have also been informed that the patient is now showing no ill effects, and her liver is back to normal.
Despite our repeated requests to 60 Minutes for details of the patient’s alleged adverse reaction and evidence of a link to our product, we haven’t received any information that would allow us to investigate and take action. We have, however, notified the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) who, together with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, mandate that any adverse reactions are reported immediately and corrective action, if required, taken without delay.
Products containing valerian have been sold by Blackmores as far back as the 1950s. To provide some context, since 2006, when the Blackmores current product range containing valerian was listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG), almost 80 million doses have been consumed by Australians. Of the 80 million doses consumed, zero serious adverse reactions to valerian have been reported to Blackmores. The herb valerian has been used for thousands of years for its relaxation and sleep related health benefits.
The 60 Minutes program also included the case of a severe adverse reaction to a non-Blackmores product containing green tea extract. The European Food Safety Authority has assessed the safety of an active component in green tea extract, with no indication of liver injury for doses of this active component below 800mg daily.
The Blackmores Group has 15 products containing green tea extract, all containing significantly less than 800 mg at the maximum label dose per day. For example, with Blackmores Exercise Multi, a consumer would need to take more than 133 tablets every day for 4 months to reach a level that may be associated with potential liver injury.
