Smartphones have opened up a whole new world when it comes to training through the use of the many running apps that are now available.
Whether you’re training for an event or running is your exercise of choice to improve health and fitness, track your ups (and downs) with one of my top five running apps.
- Runtastic
Available on apple and android devices
One of the most popular running apps, Runtastic is said to make your workouts funtastic. In addition to tracking your time, distance, speed, pace, calories and altitude, it has a range of additional features such as a personal workout diary, music player, graphs and monthly reports.
- RunKeeper
Available on apple and android devices
Track your running habits using your phone's GPS, including details on how far you've run, time, calories burned, average pace, current pace and elevation. It has an interval timer with audio cues and the ability to post your activity stats on facebook.
- Nike+ Running
Available on apple and android devices
Offers time, distance, and pace readouts during your run, along with a strong focus on setting training goals that help provide motivation. For example, it keeps a record of your farthest run, longest run and fastest 5k. You can also activate a power song to help finish off a run or charge up a steep hill.
- Ghost Race
Available on apple and android devices
Who better to compete against than yourself! Ghost Race allows you to compare your past performances on set routes from day to day with audio cues that provide updates on progress against your ghost. You can also compete in a virtual race against friends in your area.
- Get Running (Couch to 5K)
Available on apple and android devices
Great for beginners, Get Running offers a nine week program that helps you progressively build up to running 5 kilometres. Audio prompts offer feedback and encouragement that gets users in shape and off the couch.
Do you use any of these running apps? Are there any other running apps you think should be on this list?
