Can’t quite get in the mood to wind-down & relax? Take inspiration from these popular movie scenes.

After an especially tiring day, do you find there is nothing more relaxing than curling up on the couch in front of the TV? Whether you’re watching a reliable ‘oldie but a goodie’ or a new release, some scenes really know how to melt your thoughts and get you to relax.

Research has suggested that people are attracted to visual pictures that are relaxing and exciting, and this is also linked to personal wellbeing and achieving happiness. So watching relaxing movie scenes at the end of a long day is a great way to help you unwind.

While some movies are awesome from start to finish, there are a few unexpected movies that contain one or two relaxing scenes that can transport you away to another time or place. These scenes may momentarily make you blissfully unaware of the world around you.

Avatar – the tree of light

While all of the scenes depicting the habitat of Pandora seem like a fantasy-land filled with untouched natural oases, the one scene that is truly relaxing is ‘the tree of light’. Not only is it visually calming, it reminds you how humans are connected with nature, which can calm and restore your body.

Anne of Green Gables – the Lady of Shallott

Anne steps into John Berry’s old dinghy to reenact a scene from Alfred Lord Tennyson’s ‘The Lady of Shallott’, while pretending to hold a funeral with her friends. Soft music plays and the waves gently rock the boat, while Anne closes her eyes and recites one of her favourite poems from the book.

While the movie scene includes sounds of the water lapping the boat that is undeniably relaxing, it’s the sound of the poem’s rhythms that actually help calm the mind of the viewer, forming each sentence into predictable lengths and rhymes.

Zoolander – the brainwash

Okay, this may not be the most relaxing movie scene you had in mind, but it depicts a technique used to make Zoolander relax and be brainwashed. The background music is the obvious choice 1980’s classic ‘Relax don’t do it’, while Zoolander sits in a chair wearing a headset with subliminal messages.

The scene is hilarious and obvious in its methods, but the concept can be effective if taken out of context of the movie. Deep breathing, soft music and a comfortable chair are used to relax Zoolander, and can be the right ingredients and a great formula to help you relax.

Back to the future – good old 1955!

There is probably nothing more relaxing than hearing your mum’s voice when you’re feeling sick. Watching Marty McFly in Back to the Future, listening to his mum’s hoarse voice as he wakes up drowsily from a fall out of a tree while wiping his brow with a damp face towel, transports us to a time that reminds us how mum’s magic touch can be soothing and relaxing.

The only problem for Marty was she told him to relax in good old 1955!
