Spring clean your life

1 mins to read
Yes, we know it's autumn! But a spring clean needn't be limited to one season – in fact, it's a great path to freedom, happiness and a sense of relief says positive psychology expert, Dr Tim Sharp.

We've all heard the phrase ‘cluttered desk', cluttered mind, and there is a very real benefit to organising the chaos from a psychological point of view. Many of you would already be familiar with the sense of satisfaction we experience following an annual spring-clean.

As cathartic as this overhaul is though, you are missing out on opportunities to replicate this harmony throughout the year!

Tidying up your mess and cleaning out your cupboards are healthy habits in both a literal and a metaphorical sense, and things we should do on a regular basis. Start by getting rid of belongings that you do not need and avoid the urge to hold onto things for sentimental reasons. Though keepsakes can be a fantastic trigger for happy thoughts, hoarding things from the past keeps you from looking forward to your future.

The same goes for recurring thoughts, grudges or regrets: make a point of letting things go from time to time.

Reorganising your house can help you to establish new routines, and break the monotony of daily life. For example, sorting through your closet will help you to dispose of old or unflattering clothes, saving you time and leaving you with garments that make you feel good. Placing your work-out clothes where they are more accessible can encourage exercise.

If a job is too big then simply break it down into smaller, more manageable chunks. Happiness accumulates a bit like compound interest – a little effort today will go a long way tomorrow.

Finally, don't wait until September to spring-clean: tidy your home and your life as often as you need to. Get rid of physical and psychological rubbish at regular intervals and enjoy the positive consequences. You will find that freedom, happiness and a sense of relief follow.
